Seymour Whyte Tender for the Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes Upgrade

Smart Nine recently had the pleasure of working with the Seymour Whyte tenders team on the Pacific Motorway (M1) upgrade between Mudgeeraba (Exit 79) and Varsity Lakes (Exit 85) tender (M2VL).

With an average of 80,000 vehicles per day utilising the 4 lane section of motorway (exceeding practical capacity), the project will provide additional capacity to meet current and future traffic demands. Demand is growing on this section of the M1 and usage is expected to exceed an astonishing 120,000 vehicles per day by 2026.

The upgrade of the Pacific Motorway from Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes includes:

  • Widening of a 5.7km section of the motorway to:
    • 3 lanes in each direction between Robina (Exit 82) and Varsity Lakes (Exit 85);
    • 4 lanes northbound between Robina (Exit 82) and Mudgeeraba (Exit 79).
  • Entry ramps and exit ramps will be lengthened at the Robina Interchange (Exit 82) to meet current design standards;
  • Mudgeeraba Creek and Mudgeeraba Creek overflow bridges will be reconstructed on the northbound side to better withstand flood events;
  • Removal of the right turn movement from The Link Way off-ramp (Exit 80) to The Link Way northbound to improve safety;
  • Varsity Lakes interchange to be enhanced, combining the exit ramps to Stapley Drive and Reedy Creek Road and a new bridge for Stapley Drive;
  • Provision for a future managed motorway system.

The upgrade is designed to:

  • Reduce travel time;
  • Reduce congestion;
  • Improve safety;
  • Increase traffic flow;
  • Improve access on and off the motorway.

Funding of the Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes project is part of a joint $500 million package of 5 road upgrades for Queensland by the Federal and State Governments and the successful bidder is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

This is such an exciting project – Good luck Seymour Whyte!
