Cooroy to Curra Section C Project Awarded
The $384 million Bruce Highway – Cooroy to Curra – Section C Major Upgrade project has been awarded to CPB Contractors.
The 10.5km Section C project will deliver a new 4 lane divided highway between the new section of highway at Traveton to Woondum. An early package of safety works to upgrade the southern access to Gympie between Woondum and the Venardos Avenue intersection started in late July 2015 and was completed ahead of schedule in late March 2016. Construction of the major works is due to begin in March 2016 and is expected to be complete in early 2018, weather permitting.
New on and off-ramps will be constructed at Woondum to connect the new highway back into the existing highway. The new ramp connections have been designed to be upgraded to a full interchange in future to accommodate Section D: Woondum to Curra of the highway upgrade.
The existing Bruce Highway will remain as an alternative route for local road users wishing to travel between Traveston and Gympie.
Key features of Section C include:
- Divided highway (4-lanes) on a new alignment between Traveston and Woondum, with the ability to be upgraded to 6-lanes in the future;
- On and off ramps at Woondum to connect the new Bruce Highway to the existing Bruce Highway;
- Major waterway crossing structures over Traveston Creek, Kybong Creek, Cobbs Gully and Jackass Creek;
- Overpasses at Tandur Road and Woondum Road;
- Upgrade of the existing highway between Woondum and Six Mile Creek rest area as part of a separate package of early works.
The current stretch of highway is one of the most dangerous in the country, and has seen 82 crashes and seven deaths between 2000 and 2010. The new highway is designed to support safe, high-speed travel and improved access to the local road network. It will better meet capacity and efficiency demands for long-term road freight and transport needs in the region and will provide a Q100 (1 in 100 year event) flood immunity.
Funding for the $384.24 million project comes from:
- State – $76.84 million
- Federal – $307.4 million
